What Is a Dental Crown?

In a nutshell, a dental crown is like a cap you put over your tooth. It’s hollow on the inside so that your tooth can effectively fit inside of it for complete 360-degree coverage. The idea behind a dental crown is to shield your damaged pearly white from further harm, bacteria infections, and coming loose due to weak internal structure.

The Process of Getting a Dental Crown

Getting a dental crown in West Jordan is actually a fairly simple process. You’ll have two appointments:

  • Your first appointment will involve a thorough oral exam. It’s important to check on your tooth, but also the dental root and the area surrounding it. In some cases, patients will require a root canal treatment to avoid infection. Otherwise, we’ll proceed to build up your tooth with bonding or file it down to ensure it will fit snugly and safely inside of a crown.
  • It will take a week or two for the dental lab to finish customizing your final crown, but in the meantime, we’ll provide you with a temporary one so your pearly white doesn’t have to go unprotected. Once we get your permanent crown back from the lab, we’ll let you know we’re ready for your second appointment to get it set in place!

Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown

A dental crown prevents bacteria from slipping between the cracks in your damaged tooth, and will allow you to eat more comfortably and more easily. In that sense, it’s primary purpose is to restore and protect your oral health. But it also has a cosmetic purpose! A tooth-colored crown in West Jordan will help even-out your smile, so you’ll have a pearly, consistent look.
